HeyGen Video Translation vs Cheaper Alternatives (August 2026)
HeyGen's translation is genuinely good and sold two very different ways — $29-149/month in credits, or $3.00 a minute on the API. Which one you should be on, and what the alternatives actually cost.
Translating a video with the original speaker's voice and matching lip movement used to be three separate jobs. HeyGen's v2 translation does all three in one call, which is why it dominates this category. The question worth asking is not whether it works — it does — but which of its two price models you should be buying.
The two ways to buy the same thing
Consumer plans. As of mid-2026 HeyGen lists Free, Creator at $29/month, Pro at $49/month and Business at $149/month, each with a monthly credit pool (Creator around 600 credits, Pro around 1,000). Full translation with lip-sync costs about 5 credits per minute; audio-only dubbing without lip-sync costs about 2. Extra credit packs are sold on top.
Per-second API. The same v2 translation is available at fal-ai/heygen/v2/translate/precision for $0.05 per second — $3.00 per minute, read live on 2 August 2026. Inputs up to 8 minutes, 175+ target languages, one call covering translation, timbre preservation and lip-sync.
The comparison depends entirely on volume. At $3.00/minute, a $29 Creator plan is worth roughly 10 minutes of translated video a month. If you translate less than that, the API is cheaper and you pay nothing in idle months. If you translate materially more, the subscription wins — assuming the credit costs do not change under you, which is a real risk given HeyGen's history of revising what its tiers include.
One useful detail: HeyGen's precision and speed variants are priced identically on fal. There is no reason to run speed.
What the alternatives actually cost

We evaluated the ElevenLabs dubbing plus lip-sync combination and did not adopt it: it costs more, requires stitching two services, and did not buy quality that justified either. If lip movement genuinely does not matter — voice-over, narration, off-camera speaker — audio-only dubbing is much cheaper and you should use it.
Reputation, honestly
HeyGen's product quality and its customer experience are rated very differently. Its Trustpilot score sits around 2.4, and the recurring complaints are about billing and about plan terms being revised — an "unlimited" tier being quietly capped, for instance. None of that says the translation is bad. It says a monthly commitment carries a risk that a per-second API call does not.
The rights obligation nobody mentions
Translating a video you do not own is a licensing problem regardless of which tool you use. HeyGen's terms put the obligation on you. If you are translating your own content, this is a non-issue; if you are translating someone else's, get the rights first. Any product that lets you paste a link without asking is not thereby giving you permission.
